Growing up, I always wanted to be a mermaid – now I am one by Anna Haskell

A shape moves under the water, gliding fast and smooth beneath the surface.

Then it dives deeper before suddenly flicking up a beautifully colourful scaly tail. 

But it’s not in the sea, it’s in a pool. And the creature isn’t a fish, it’s me – swimming as a mermaid.  

As an 80s child, I adored Disney’s The Little Mermaid and I’m sure that, just like me, many young girls wanted to be Ariel. Not once did I think I would come close to fulfilling that dream.
